Kevin workshop - Kansas City Improv Festival, Kansas City, MO

Workshop sign-up: Check website

  • Date/Time: Saturday Aug 18th from 10 AM to 5 PM
  • Location: Buffalo Room (Banquet Room)
  • Teachers: Kevin McDonald
  • Skill Level: All Levels
  • Max Students: 16

Join Kevin McDonald of the Kids in the Hall for a daylong workshop to learn how to write sketches through improvisation - just like the Kids in the Hall used to do. But not only that! You will do a show that night with Kevin, in front of a real live audience, performing the sketches you wrote that day. Exciting? Kevin thinks so, and he thinks you will too.

Kevin will talk about the secrets of writing comedy sketches (hopefully they’re secrets and not lies) and teach you the Kids in the Hall process of coming up with an idea and turning it into a sketch through improvisational rehearsal. You will be performing and writing with Kevin supervising, all day. And that night, you put on your show! During the workshop, he promises bathroom and lunch breaks and if you ask him, there's a good chance Kevin will tell stories about the Kids in the Hall. You might actually have to ask him to shut up telling stories about the Kids in the Hall. He's beside me now, telling stories about the Kids in the Hall. Shut up Kevin.

  • Google Calendar ICS

Workshop sign-up here

Learn The Kids in the Hall method of writing sketches through improv from Kevin McDonald!

Sea Tea Comedy Theater is proud to bring sketch comedy legend Kevin McDonald back to Hartford for a master class and a show!

This master class starts with the basics of sketch comedy and comedy writing, to games that lead to thinking naturally about writing & performing at the same time. Groups of students begin to improvise and Kevin's notes on those improvised scenes will lead to figuring out how the scenes could develop into fully developed comedy sketches.

By the end of the day on Saturday, Kevin and the students in this class will have written 4 to 7 completely new comedy sketches.

New For This Year: A Whole Second Day! Students will have option of choosing just the Satuday workshop, or Saturday ANDSunday! The sketches created by the 2-day students will appear in the Sunday night show, with each 2-day student appearing in at least one sketch.

An important note from Kevin: "I will probably also bore the students with Kids in the Hall anecdotes throughout. Sorry about that."

Schedule:

Saturday 2/24 Workshop: 10:00 am to 5:30 pm with a one-hour break for lunch

Sunday 2/25 Workshop (2-Day Students Only): 10:00 am to 5:30 pm with a one-hour break for lunch

Sunday 2/25 Performance: 7:00 pm - A big show featuring stand-up comedy by Kevin McDonald, sketch comedy by & featuring the 2-day students, and an improv show with Kevin McDonald!

This is a full weekend of comedy writing, improvising, and performing with Kevin McDonald!

Kevin McDonald is a founding member of the legendary Canadian sketch comedy group, The Kids in the Hall. He's been nominated for three Emmys for his comedy writing. His movie credits include Lilo & Stitch and Galaxy Quest. He's appeared on MADtv, Friends, That 70's Show, Seinfeld, and Arrested Development.

Don't miss this chance to learn from one of the best, right here in Hartford!
